Our Story
Prism Lines (词有戏) started from a personal frustration: I love TV series and want English—but neither path I tried stuck.
The Vocabulary App Fatigue
I tried popular flashcard apps. Lists were complete and stats looked great. After a month, many words I only recognized in multiple-choice—not in a real line on screen. Words lived in the app; shows lived elsewhere, with a wall between them.
The Binge-Watching Illusion
I also tried “just watch more.” I knew plots by heart while reading subtitles faster than the picture. Without subs, I still caught only familiar exclamations. New words flashed by; my brain skipped them because plot did not require them.
Fun and effective could not rely on willpower alone—the workflow had to be designed.
Why Desktop First
Large video files, precise subtitle timing, and reliable clip replay during review fit desktop well: local decode, local cache. I wanted data on your computer by default—not “convenient sync” that ships viewing and learning trails to the cloud.
We are building Windows / macOS first to nail core experience before other platforms.
What We Believe
- Start from content you already love, not “should study but boring” textbooks.
- Every know / don’t know is active thought—not scrubbing a progress bar.
- Words need sentences; sentences need the frame and sound from that moment—or review is just card flipping, not memory recovery.
